What does a hearing test at Clear-Tone include?

A hearing test at Clear-Tone has four parts. The goal is to understand your hearing well enough to know whether hearing aids will help, and if they will, exactly how to fit them.

StepWhat happensAbout how long
1. Your history and concernsWe talk about where you struggle to hear, your health and medications, noise exposure and family history.5 to 10 minutes
2. Ear checkYour hearing care professional looks into your ear canals with a lighted scope to check for wax or anything else in the way.5 to 10 minutes
3. Sound booth testingTone testing to find the softest sounds you hear at each pitch, bone conduction testing, and speech testing in quiet and in noise. We also measure your most comfortable listening level and the point where sound becomes too loud.15 to 25 minutes
4. Results and next stepsWe go through your results in plain language and talk about what would help.5 to 10 minutes

If the ear check points to a middle-ear issue, we may also measure how your eardrum responds to gentle changes in air pressure (tympanometry). Want the full step-by-step? Read what happens during a hearing test.

Who should get a hearing test?

Book a hearing test if any of these sound familiar:

  • You often ask people to repeat themselves.
  • People seem to mumble, especially in restaurants or groups.
  • You turn the TV or phone up louder than others like.
  • Family or friends have mentioned your hearing.
  • You hear ringing or buzzing in your ears.
  • You have worked around loud noise for years.
  • Your current hearing aids do not seem to help as much as they used to.

See a physician or ENT promptly, before a hearing test, if your hearing dropped suddenly, you have hearing loss in one ear only, ear pain or drainage, or dizziness.

What do your hearing test results mean?

Your results are shown on an audiogram, a chart of the softest sounds you can hear at each pitch in each ear. Your hearing care professional walks you through it before you leave and explains three things:

  • How much hearing loss you have: normal, mild, moderate, severe or profound. See degrees of hearing loss.
  • What type it is: whether the loss is in the inner ear or the outer or middle ear, which the bone conduction test helps show. See types of hearing loss.
  • How well you understand speech: especially in background noise, which is often what people notice most.

What happens after your hearing test?

There are three usual outcomes:

  • Hearing aids would help. We talk through styles and technology for your hearing and lifestyle, including Starkey and Signia and the latest AI hearing aids. Same-day fittings are available for most patients, and fittings are verified in your ear with real-ear measurement. See hearing aid fitting.
  • Your hearing is within the normal range. You leave with a baseline to compare against next time. That is a successful appointment.
  • Something needs medical attention. If your results point to a medical cause, we refer you to a physician or ENT.

If ringing in your ears is a concern, we can also talk about tinnitus evaluation and management.
